FOOTBALL IS ALSO A WOMEN'S THING

FOOTBALL IS ALSO A WOMEN'S THING

Today, March 8th, International Women’s Day, we celebrate, among other things, that women can enjoy football with total normality. Not many years ago this was considered odd, that a woman liked football was something “unfeminine”, for “machos”.

We have come a long way, and there is still a long way to go. We as fans notice it in many aspects, for example when we go to a stadium and among the security guards at the entrance controls, eight are men and only three are women. And this is just one example.

But it is the players who know it best: if we compare their salary with that of their male counterparts, we would realize. The attendees at their matches (except on rare occasions) never outnumber those at the men’s matches. But we too love our team’s jersey; we too suffer, cheer, travel, celebrate and, in short, live football. We really like that there are more and more women in the world of football. More and more of us are in the stadiums, we are commentators, referees, and more and more of us are club presidents representing the members of our neighborhoods, towns and even countries.

Today we want to celebrate this reality by highlighting a fact that happened just 4 days ago and that makes us enormously proud. Carmen, the president of our Peña Atlética de Alemania, invited Marina, the president of the Peña Bética 13 Streifen de Alemania, to the Atlético de Madrid – Betis match on March the 3rd in Madrid, and they went to the Metropolitano together. Two strong, determined and above all football-loving women who move in a world controlled by men and who handle it with total ease and solvency.

Women have arrived in the world of football and we have come to stay. Bravo for us!
