DAY OF THE PEÑAS 2024
The Day of the Peñas is a day designed for all peñistas to come to the stadium and celebrate that we are one red-and-white family. Unfortunately, the sanction imposed a few days ago by Atlético de Madrid on the members of the animation section dampened the festive atmosphere compared to previous years. Many members who had nothing to do with the throwing of lighters during the last derby were unable to enter. Not only that, but they now face a ban from traveling to matches for five games, even though some had already booked flights and hotels.
Everything had been set up in the north stand, which was a new and strange decision since the attractions and stage had always been spread around the entire stadium. Even so, many colchoneros gathered, accompanied by splendid weather and a match time that had long been requested. They came with their families and friends to celebrate our day. Bouncy castles, guessing games, interaction tents, and a large stage livened up the party. At lunchtime, the traditional paella (delicious as always) was served to all attendees, although some peñistas decided to boycott it in protest of the Club’s sanction.
At 3:00 p.m., a gathering was called at the flag where numerous peñas met in silent protest, displaying their flags and discontent, as well as their solidarity with those unfairly punished. There were no shouts or chants, just discomfort and sad faces. The decision of some members not to enter the stadium to watch the match was supported by many others who, in solidarity, decided to stay outside and make their protest visible. The animation stand was empty, giving an image of desolation that filled us all with sorrow.
Some members of our peña visited the Metropolitano for the first time on Sunday, and after the match, we gathered with other peñas at Brindis, which is quickly becoming our meeting point. There, we gave it our all along with our friends from the Noroeste, Santa Elena, Benaventana, La Bañeza, Pablo Barrios, Frente Madrileño… so many peñas that were later joined by those from Poland and New York, ending the night together, dancing and singing to the rhythm set by our beloved Metropolitano Rock Band.
We love this day and will attend whenever we can. We hope that next time the stands will be packed, and sanctions will be reserved only for the violent ones, who should never be allowed in any stadium.
Today we say, Aúpa Atleti! and also, more than ever, Long live the Atlético Peñas!
