ETERNAL LUIS ARAGONÉS

On February 1, 2014, Luis Aragonés —DON LUIS ARAGONÉS, the Wise Man of Hortaleza, our beloved “Zapatones”— left us for the third tier of the stadium, orphaning all Atlético fans and all true lovers of football.
Every year, his passing is commemorated, and this year, it coincided with the Atlético de Madrid vs. Mallorca match. The statue of the Wise Man outside the Metropolitano is always a place of pilgrimage for rojiblanco supporters, and on Saturday, even more so.In the morning, Frente Atlético placed a beautiful floral wreath in the shape of Atlético de Madrid’s crest. Throughout the day, thousands of fans visited his statue to remember him and pay their respects.
No member of the Peña Atlética de Alemania—where we deeply revere Luis—had been able to visit until yesterday. It was Nieves, one of our members, who, on behalf of the entire supporters’ club, laid a bouquet of red and white flowers next to our flag at the foot of the statue.A small tribute to a legend of our club, a piece of Atlético de Madrid’s history, and of Spanish football as a whole. As Spain’s national coach in 2008, he led La Roja to their second European Championship, paving the way for the most successful era in the team’s history. A true icon.
Eternal Luis Aragonés.
